What are You Working On? Sunday, June 30, 2019

Years and years ago I used to have a podcast called What are You Working On? or WAYWO for short. The concept to the show was for the group of us to discuss what we were working on since the last time we recorded.

I thought it might be cool to use that concept on this blog. So, this will just be a post for me to discuss recent things I've been working on. I'll try to make posts like these periodically

A couple weeks ago—maybe a month ago—I decided to get back into Warhammer 40,000. This has been taking up a good bit of my hobby time. This has mostly been in painting. I'm working on painting a Space Marine Tactical Squad. I'm making reasonable progress. I'm about halfway through the squad.

Also for 40k I decided to make status tokens. They are pretty basic and simple but, I want them to look nice so they are taking a bit of time as well. Don't worry, I'll have a post on these once I get some photographs of the completed tokens.

I've also been putting a tiny bit of time into Elite: Dangerous. I hit the reset button (AKA Clear Save) on my sencondary account and am trying to get back into the game. I haven't played for a little bit after some discuraging incidents that happend several months back.

That's about it… Please feel free to share what you've been working on in the comments below.

Batman and The Spectre, Hell Yeah!

I'm not a fan of most modern comics. Too many are just the middle 22 pages of a graphic novel. They don't have a whole plot to themselves with a beginning, middle, and end. They just have the middle bit of some longer story that is being cut up into small er chunks so that the publisher can sell it twice: once as individual comics and then again as a trade paperback.

That said, Detective Comics #1006 might be the start of something awesome. It could be the start of an awesome team up between Batman and The Spectre.

Or, it could be the the beginning of a new trade paperback. I won't really know till I read issue #1007. But, this issue certainly has me wanting to read that one.

Raspberry Pi 4 Announcement

I know I'm a bit late with this but the Raspberry Pi 4 B was announced this week and that was pretty awesome! Let's start with an overview of the key features:

  • Memory: 1G, 2G, and 4G options
  • Two 4k outputs
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Two USB 3 ports

That's all amazing and very awesome stuff. I think this really makes the argument that the Raspberry Pi can be a desktop replacement computer for a good number of people.

But, all of that comes at a price—and I'm not just talking about $55 for the 4G of memory. I mean the electricity that powers it. This is going to take a 15W USB-C power supply. This is a change from previous Raspberry Pis.

Raspberry Pis used to be great for portable computer projects. One of the reasons for this was that you could power them off of a rechargable USB power brick. I wonder if that will continue to be the case with this new version. The power demands may out strip what those USB batteries can do.

For me, I'm probably going to get one. The main thing I can think to use it on would be to run something like a DIY Maslow CNC. The fact that it is fanless would be a major boon there.
